KAMLOOPS — Each year, families from throughout the region experience the comfort of the Marjorie Willoughby Snowden Hospice Home, when they have a loved one in need of palliative care.

The pandemic has curtailed many regular fundraising activities that benefit the hospice. In response, a group of family, friends and co-workers have come together to hold the Stop, Drop and Donate fundraiser for the Kamloops Hospice Association.

“The first two years were awesome, raising just shy of $66,000,” Marilyn Giesbrecht, organizer of the Stop, Drop and Donate fundraiser says.

KAMLOOPS — After Cassie McNutt raised more than $19,300 this past winter for Kamloops Hospice, she was finally able to see what her charitable efforts bought.

McNutt is a 15-year-old high school student in Kamloops, and hosts an annual charity drive for hospice — with an impressive Christmas light display at her family’s home in Dallas.

After this most recent fundraiser, Kamloops Hospice was able to purchase two patient ceiling lifts.

Car raffle for hospice care

Car raffle for hospice care

May 11, 2021 / 12:01 am

They are the happy moments in the most trying of times.

Kamloops Hospice Association, which has 12 private rooms at its Whiteshield Crescent location, is there to provide care, love and support to people who are at the end of their lives.

Hospice care is patient and family centred, which means “if someone wants ice cream for breakfast, we do that,” executive director Wendy Marlow says. “We’ve had staff barbecue up a beautiful steak and just put it to a person’s lips.”

The rooms overlook beautiful Peterson Creek Park, making it “a beautiful spot for families and for people at end of life,” Marlow says.

Kamloops Hospice Association normally hosts a gala each year to raise significant money for its operations, since it is one of only a handful of “independent” hospices in the province. Interior Health covers just less than 50% of the annual budget, and KHA has to come up with at least another $1 million each year to keep the doors open. The organization’s last gala before COVID-19 raised $170,000, but the event has been cancelled the past 2 years due to the pandemic.

“You can imagine losing that has been huge,” she says.

That is a lot of funding to make up, but Marlow believes the organization has found a solution. It is conducting the “Let’s Get Electrified” raffle for a 2018 Chevrolet Bolt Premier, which is an electric vehicle valued at $28,000. It has has a range of nearly 400 kilometres, leather and heated seats in both the front and back, and high-quality cameras and screens.

RESULTS … Car Raffle and 50/50 Draw

Let’s get Electrified!

Sales just ended on our first ONLINE Car Raffle and 50/50 Draw!

Winners will be announced after the Draw

Total Ticket Sales:  $167,580

Total 50/50 Jackpot:  $69,850 (winner takes half!)

Winner Car Raffle:  L. Biggan

Winner 50/50: D. Strong

An error was made with the configuration of the 50/50 draw so the intended 50/50 Draw held on July 6, 2021 was drawn out of the wrong ticket pool, which inaccurately presented as a 50/50 draw.  This caused a name to be drawn of someone who had not purchased a 50/50 ticket.  Kamloops Hospice Association, BC Gaming and Enforcement Branch and the BC Certified Gaming Service Provider have worked together to quickly move forward, with a 50/50 draw from the correct pool of ticket purchases.

This means everyone who purchased a 50/50 ticket had a chance to win.  Thank you for participating and supporting Hospice and congratulations to the winners!

THANK YOU!

All funds raised will support end of life compassionate care in Kamloops and surrounding Communities.
