KAMLOOPS — The Kamloops Hospice Association has received a boost in funding through the BC Interior Community Foundation.  A cheque was presented outside the Marjorie Willoughby Snowden Memorial Hospice Home Thursday morning (July 23) in the amount of $8,500.

We are hiring a Custodian/Maintenance Worker

POSITION:  Custodian/Maintenance Worker

Term of Employment:    Full-time Permanent

Hours of Employment:  Regular schedule 30 hours per week; flexible to work up to 40 hours per week for holiday coverage, special events and projects

Schedule: Wednesday to Sunday; 6 hours per day

Position Overview:  The Custodian is responsible for performing janitorial and maintenance duties for the Kamloops Hospice Association which includes two main buildings: (1) Marjorie Willoughby Hospice Home and (2) the Cooper Resource Centre

Key responsibilities:

Cleans by dusting, mopping, washing, vacuuming, sweeping, cleaning and scrubbing all surfaces of equipment, fixtures and furniture, patient beds, floors, windows and window coverings, walls, ceilings, entrances and doors in both buildings

Empty all trash cans and recycling containers; ensure that recycling material is taken to recycling depot

Clean sinks, countertops, microwaves, stoves, hood fan and refrigerators in staff rooms, main and family kitchen; On occasion launders sheets and linens as required

Service, sanitize and supply washrooms and hand sanitizers in patients’ rooms and common areas; Restock and order supplies for same

Maintain building, building and yard equipment in a clean, safe and operational condition; Clean inside/outside of windows, windowsills and gutters; as appropriate, completes and/or coordinates small electrical or plumbing repairs

Sweeping and clearing of pathways and areas surrounding the building; Perform snow removal manually, spread ice melter and sand as required

Performs light landscaping such as mowing lawns; repairs and/or coordinates irrigation issues and seasonal start-up and end of season duties; takes composting to appropriate City depot

Report to a supervisor any deficiencies, signs of failure or unsafe conditions in or near buildings and all building equipment

Performs other related duties similar in scope and complexity; Assists with emergency situations

Arranges for outside maintenance contractors as needed

Help set up for special functions as required both onsite and offsite

Compensation: $19-22/hour dependant upon experience.  A comprehensive extended health and dental benefit plan plus RRSP matching is available after six months.

Qualifications:

  • Grade 12 or equivalent and two years of demonstrated experience
  • Completion of a Building Service Worker course, trades course(s) in electrical or plumbing or demonstrated experience will be considered
  • Interest in taking courses to lead and/or develop site OHS safety program; stays current on MDS as required
  • Basic computer skills including Microsoft word and excel

Competencies:

  • Detail oriented and willing to complete documentation and reports in accordance with licensing and WCB reporting requirements; maintain equipment and building maintenance records
  • Takes pride in maintaining a clean and safe environment for Kamloops Hospice
  • Takes the initiative to identify more effective and efficient practices
  • Good written and oral English skills
  • Flexible and adaptable; Ability to prioritize multiple tasks
  • Ability to develop respectful and cooperative relationships with support services team, clinical team, staff, and volunteers

Working Conditions:

  • Must be able to lift 30 pounds
  • Ability to be on feet and move vigorously throughout the day
  • Ability to perform the requirements of the job which may include working independently and sometimes with the assistance of volunteers with varying backgrounds

Conditions of Employment:

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a clear Criminal Records Check
  • Must possess and maintain a valid BC Driver’s License

Stop, Drop and Donate event stocks shelves, raises over $28,000 for Kamloops Hospice Association

KAMLOOPS — A weekend fundraiser for the Kamloops Hospice Association turned out to be a huge success, raising more than $28,000.  The Stop, Drop and Donate event saw many Kamloops residents come through the parking lot at IG Wealth Management on Sahali Terrace Saturday (July 11), bringing money, food, and household items for the Marjorie Willoughby Snowden home.

Kamloops Hospice asks for donations during National Hospice Palliative Care Week

KAMLOOPS — This week is National Hospice Palliative Care Week, and the Kamloops Hospice Association is working out a way to hold an annual fundraiser virtually.

The Hospice Association was planning to host its annual Evening to Remember fundraiser at the Coast Hotel this Saturday (May 9).

It’s the single largest fundraiser for the Marjorie Willoughby Snowden Memorial Hospice Home and was set to raise $170,000.  While people are no longer able to buy tickets for large gatherings, the Hospice Association is hoping people will donate instead.
