Castanet News ~ A drive-thru for hospice

Support Kamloops Hospice by going through this drive-thru

Tereza Verenca – Jun 25, 2020 / 4:00 am

Drive-thrus aren’t just for picking up a Big Mac, fries and a large Coke.

They’re also for supporting charities.

Giesbrecht & Associates IG Private Wealth Management is organizing a “stop, drop and donate” drive-thru event next month for the Kamloops Hospice Association.

The COVID-19 pandemic has meant a decrease in funds for the local non-profit. Its thrift store had to temporarily close and its annual gala had to be cancelled. In an earlier interview with Castanet, executive director Wendy Marlow said staff need to raise $1.2 million every year to maintain operations, including running the 12-bed Marjorie Willoughby Snowden Memorial Hospice Home.

“We know the hospice plays an incredible role in the community for everyone, doesn’t matter who you are,” says drive-thru organizer Marilyn Giesbrecht. “I know 250 some odd people come through their doors every year; that’s a lot of people so we want to makes sure that continues on.”

It’s also personal for Giesbrecht. She accessed hospice in 2011, when her husband had a three-week stay before he passed.

Castanet News ~ Butterfly planters for hospice

Kamloops Hospice Association auctioning off two butterfly planters

Tereza Verenca – Jun 3, 2020 / 4:00 am

If you’re looking to beautify your outdoor patio or your front walkway, the Kamloops Hospice Association is auctioning off two butterfly planters.

The flower arrangements were going to be auctioned off during the non-profit’s annual gala last month. However, like festivals, weddings and other large gatherings, the roughly 500-person event had to be cancelled because of COVID-19.

“We decided we can still do (the auction),” says Wendy Marlow, executive director of the hospice association.

KAMLOOPS — This week is National Hospice Palliative Care Week, and the Kamloops Hospice Association is working out a way to hold an annual fundraiser virtually.

The Hospice Association was planning to host its annual Evening to Remember fundraiser at the Coast Hotel this Saturday (May 9).

It’s the single largest fundraiser for the Marjorie Willoughby Snowden Memorial Hospice Home and was set to raise $170,000.  While people are no longer able to buy tickets for large gatherings, the Hospice Association is hoping people will donate instead.

KAMLOOPS — Watching a loved one enter hospice is hard enough. But imagine not being able to see them at all.

With the doors now locked at the Marjorie Willoughby Snowden Memorial Hospice Home, that is the reality facing families who have loved ones in hospice during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Yesterday was a really sad day when we locked our doors at 7 o’clock last night,” said Executive Director of the Kamloops Hospice Society Wendy Marlow. “It’s a loss. We can’t serve families the way we always have.”
